In 1942 the Commanding General of the Galveston Army Air Force Base enlisted the aid of the Galveston Mayor and several prominent businessmen, some from the mainland, about forming a dog club. This was known as the Treasure Island Kennel Club, and held several dog shows in Galveston.

With the deactivation of the base, several serious dog fanciers realized the need for such, and again the aforementioned sponsors were called upon. This new club was called the Galveston County Kennel Club and was granted a charter from the State of Texas in April, 1952. After meeting the necessary requirements for an AKC show, the GCKC held their first such in Galveston on October 9, 1952. Dr. Douglas Williams, the County Health Director, was president at that time.

Later, in 1953, the GCKC joined the Texas Dog Show Circuit, holding their shows in March. Later, a second dog show was held in Galveston in November, 1959. This date was changed to one in October. In September, 1972 the Galveston County Kennel Club became a member club of the American Kennel Club. Dr. Bill Henry was the president at the time, with Mrs. Miriam A. Boyd as secretary. This latter office was divided in 1973 into corresponding secretary and recording secretary.

Since its inception, the GCKC has contributed to many local charities, assisted youth groups, held a Pet Show at the Galveston County Fair and Rodeo, given scholarships, held sanctioned matches as well as two AKC dog shows each year, and assists non-member residents of Galveston County searching for a particular breed of purebred dog. One of the least known of their activities is their participation in the Dog Care Program. During the club year, they also have some social activities, but one member claims, "We work like dogs to help our canine friends and their owners".

The membership of the GCKC is very diversified - 6 AKC judges, grooming shops, private kennels, boarding kennels, pet shop owners and operators, veterinarians, restaurant owners, bus drivers, college students, 4-H leaders, etc.

Monthly meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each month. Contact the club at (409) 925-4310 for more information.
